Top Pitching Prospect of the Week
Jacob DeGrom, SP (A+) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
DeGrom (2010, 9th round) has come out of nowhere to put himself squarely on the Mets prospect map. Essentially found money, DeGrom had elbow issues shortly after signing for $95K and wound up having Tommy John surgery, the recovery costing him his entire 2011 season. But man has he come back strong. He went 6-3 in 15 starts for A-ball Savannah, posting a 2.51 ERA in 89.2 innings, striking out 78 against just 14 walks and 77 hits. If the hard-throwing righty's first start following his promotion to Advanced A St. Lucie is any indication, he hasn't missed a beat. He'll probably start 2013 in the St. Lucie rotation, but given his age (he turned 24 in June), they could push him to AA Binghamton. Either way, DeGrom is another name to know and an arm to watch.
Honorable Mention:
Mark Cohoon, SP (AA) - 9.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K
Hansel Robles, SP (A-) - 8.0 IP, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
Jeurys Familia, SP (AAA) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Erik Goeddel, SP (A+) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
Top Hitting Prospect of the Week
Vicente Lupo, OF (R) - 34 PA, .458/.618/.958, 8 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 9 BB, 6 K
First the caveat. Lupo (2010, international) plays in the Dominican Summer League, and statistics from foreign rookie leagues don't mean a whole heck of a lot. That said, the 18-year-old right-handed hitting outfielder, who for $350K was the Mets' top international signing of 2010, has absolutely dominated the DSL this season. Through 245 plate appearances, he's put up a video game-esque (and comfortably league-leading) 1.126 OPS as part of a .349/.496/.630 triple slash. He ranks 1st in runs (53), 2nd in extra base hits (30), 2nd in home runs (10), 3rd in RBI (45), and 5th in walks (41). Those 41 walks come against 40 strikeouts. Lupo appears to have dramatically improved his approach from an age 17 campaign last summer that saw him hit .197 and strike out almost 3 times as much as he walked. His stateside debut in 2013 (probably in short season ball in either Kingsport or Brooklyn) will be one of the more interesting developments in the Mets' system next year.
Honorable Mention:
Daniel Muno, 2B (A+) - 21 PA, .474/.500/.842, 4 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB
Wilmer Flores, IF (AA) - 24 PA, .545/.583/.636, 3 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K
Matt Den Dekker, OF (AAA) - 26 PA, .360/.385/.560, 4 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 1 BB, 8 K, 2 SB
Kevin Plawecki, C (A-) - 20 PA, .333/.500/.533, 4 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 2 K
Top Non-Prospect of the Week
