Top Pitching Prospect of the Week
Zack Wheeler, SP (AA) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 1.29 ERA, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
Stud. This space is in imminent danger of become the weekly Zack Wheeler report. Wheeler (2011 trade, originally 2009 1st round 6th overall) was predictably brilliant again for the B-Mets this week. The lone run he gave up in his start against the best offensive team in the Eastern League came on back-to-back one-out doubles in the 7th, after which he rebounded with a strikeout and groundout to end the inning and strand the runner. On the season, Wheeler has been falt-out dominant. Despite being one of the league's youngest pitchers at 22, his 1.88 ERA ranks 4th and his 60 strikeouts lead the league. He hasn't been giving up hits all year (opponents are batting just .169 against him), and in his past 2 starts (15 IP) he's only surrendered 2 walks. It will be interesting to see how much longer the Mets will leave Wheeler in AA.
Honorable Mention:
Jeurys Familia, SP (AAA) - 11.2 IP, 1-1, 2.31 ERA, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 10 K
Jack Leathersich, RP (A+) - 5.2 IP, 0-0, 1.59 ERA, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 12 K
Rafael Montero, SP (A) - 8.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
Yohan Almonte, SP (A+) - 12.0 IP, 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
Top Hitting Prospect of the Week
Matt Den Dekker, CF (AA) - 25 PA, .391/.440/.652, 4 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 7 K
In something of a down week for Mets positional prospects, Den Dekker (2010, 5th round) continues to mash at AA. A glance at the Eastern League leaderboard find his name plastered all over the place. He leads the league in doubles (18), extra base hits (30), and runs scored (41), ranks 3rd in OPS (.927), 4th in batting average (.318) and slugging (.545), 5th in 3B (4), 8th in HR (8),and 9th in OBP (.382). At 24 he's not young for the league and he still strikes out more than you'd like (his 60 Ks rank him 4th in the league in that category, too), but that's about all you can quibble with about his performance in AA. And he's still plus defensively in center. A promotion to AAA should be forthcoming for one of the more underrated prospects in the Mets' system.
Honorable Mention:
Alonzo Harris, CF (A+) - 30 PA, .360/.467/.720, 6 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 BB, 3 K, 3 SB
