Top Pitching Prospect of the Week
Darin Gorski, SP (AA) - 8.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Gorski (2009, 7th round) turned in his longest & first walk-free outing of the year this week. After bursting onto the Mets' prospect radar last year from out of nowhere, he has struggled to find his footing in AA, posting a 4-3 record with a mediocre 3.97 ERA and pedestrian BB and K numbers (7.17 K/9, 3.97 BB/9). But this past outing, he navigated around 7 hits, including a pair of doubles, to go 8 scoreless. Hopefully Gorski can build off this successful start and get his 2012 season back on track. As of now, he still looks like the best chance the Mets have to get a Major Leaguer out of their miserable 2009 draft.
Honorable Mention:
Zack Wheeler, SP (AA) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K
Collin McHugh, SP (AA) - 5.2 IP, 0-1, 1.59 ERA, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
Chase Hutchingson, SP (A+) - 7.0 IP, 0-0, 1.29 ERA, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Gonzalez Germen, SP (AA) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 2.57 ERA, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
Top Hitting Prospect of the Week
Matt Den Dekker, CF (AA/AAA) - 23 PA, .545/.565/.727, 7 R, 4 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 6 K, 3 SB
What can you say? Den Dekker (2010, 5th round) has been the best hitter in the system this year and it hasn't been particularly close. At least Eastern League pitchers can breathe a sigh of relief since Den Dekker has been promoted to AAA Buffalo. He's only played one game in AAA, but he already has his first extra base hit. As a 2010 college draftee, Den Dekker isn't Rule 5 eligible this year. Given that fact, plus the Mets' 40-man roster crunch and the presence of at least 2 defensively capable centerfielders on the big league roster, there might not be much Den Dekker can do to force his way into the big leagues this year. Regardless, he's crushing the ball, he's playing a great CF, and he's been one of the best stories in the Mets' system this year. And the national prospect watchers are starting to pay closer attention.
Honorable Mention:
Jefry Marte, 3B (AA) - 18 PA, .412/.444/.706, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Vicente Lupo, OF (R) - 26 PA, .400/.538/.750, 6 R, 4 2B, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 3 BB, 2 K
Eric Campbell, 1B (AA) - 20 PA, .389/.450/.722, 2 R, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Travis Taijeron, CF (A) - 23 PA, .368/.435/.526, 4 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 SB
