2012 Mets Prospect Report: Week 8 (5/24 - 5/30)

Top Pitching Prospect of the Week

Elvin Ramirez, RP (AAA) - 5.2 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K

What a return it's been for Ramirez (2004 international) who was drafted away from the Mets in the December 2010 Rule 5 draft, only to spend all of 2011 on the Nationals' DL and then be returned to New York last fall. The 24-year-old's sterling week is really just a microcosm of his dominance over the past 2 months. For the year, Ramirez has thrown 27.2 innings (13 in AA, 14.2 in AAA) and has surrendered just 12 hits, 2 runs, and 8 walks, while amassing 35 strikeouts. The way the Major League bullpen has struggled, Ramirez should be on the next flight to New York City. Major League roster issues are the only thing holding up a callup, but he's making it harder and harder for that to remain a viable excuse.

Honorable Mention:

Cory Mazzoni, SP (A+) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 1.29 ERA, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Collin McHugh, SP (AA) - 8.0 IP, 1-0, 2.25 ERA, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Rafael Montero, SP (A) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 3.86 ERA, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Josh Edgin, RP (AAA) - 4.2 IP, 0-0, 1.93 ERA, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Top Hitting Prospect of the Week

Wilmer Flores, 3B (A+) - 27 PA, .417/.481/.792, 4 R, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 0 K, 1 SB

Travis Taijeron would have been a fine pick here, too, but I'm going with Flores (2007 international). His 3 bombs this week give him 10 for the year, tied for the Florida State League lead. Amazingly, the 2012 power surge has not led to more strikeouts for the 20-year-old third baseman. In over 200 plate appearance, Flores has struck out just 18 times. He's also drawn just 12 walks this year, so if you're looking to nitpick, that's pretty much the only place you're going to be able to do it (though even there, he did draw 3 walks this week). Flores will continue to develop defensively at 3B until the Mets decide to move him up to AA (and resolve what will be a logjam at 3B with Jefry Marte), but it's obvioius that the bat is ready for the next challenge now.
