Top Pitching Prospect of the Week
Zack Wheeler, SP (AA) - 15.0 IP, 2-0, 1.80 ERA, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 15 K
Wheeler (2011 trade, originally 2009 1st round 6th overall) has been everything the Mets had hoped he'd be when they acquired him from the Giants last summer in exchange for two months of Carlos Beltran. The walks are the biggest (and perhaps the only) black mark on his 2012 season so far, but even with them the soon-to-be-22-year-old has been dominating AA hitters. Despite skipping a start with a fingernail issue, Wheeler leads the Eastern League in strikeouts. He also ranks 3rd in WHIP and 5th in ERA among pitchers with at least 8 starts. Wheeler is Rule 5 eligible, meaning he'll need to be placed on the 40-man roster prior to this winter's draft. So at the risk of getting way ahead of ourselves, if he's promoted to AAA mid-year and performs well there, it's possible that Wheeler could even see a September call-up in 2012. And if not, it's a safe bet that we'll see him at Citi Field at some point in 2013.
Honorable Mention:
Erik Goeddel, SP (A+) - 5.0 IP, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
Rafael Montero, RP (A) - 6.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Elvin Ramirez, RP (AAA) - 3.1 IP, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Josh Edgin, RP (AAA) - 4.1 IP, 0-1, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
Top Hitting Prospect of the Week
Jefry Marte, 3B (AA) - 28 PA, .409/.536/.727, 6 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 6 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
It's quietly been a fantastic season for the 20-year-old Marte (2007 international), whose outstanding week lifted his season line to .321/.392/.450. Among players with at least 100 PA, that's good for 7th in the Eastern League in batting, 14th in OBP, and 24th in slugging. That's impressive on its own, but doubly so when you consider that Marte is also the 5th youngest hitter in the league. In addition to settling into AA as a hitter, Marte's defense at 3B is vastly improved from his time in Savannah, where he was an absolute butcher at the hot corner (albeit as a 17- and 18-year-old). I expect Marte will spend the full year in Binghamton, but things could get interesting if/when Wilmer Flores (currently manning third a level down) hits his way into AA.
Honorable Mention:
Aderlin Rodriguez, 3B (A) - 28 PA, .364/.500/.682, 4 R, 4 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 6 BB, 6 K
Matt Den Dekker, CF (AA) - 37 PA, .355/.432/.452, 5 R, 3 2B, 3 RBI, 5 BB, 12 K, 2 SB
Blake Forsythe, C (A+) - 22 PA, .389/.455/.833, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 3 BB, 9 K
Francisco Pena, C (A+) - 20 PA, .400/.400/.700, 4 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 0 BB, 5 K
Top Non-Prospect of the Week
Raul Reyes, OF (AA) - 28 PA, .429/.429/.821, 6 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 0 BB, 6 K
