2012 Mets Prospect Report: Week 18 (8/2 - 8/8)

Top Pitching Prospect of the Week

Tyler Pill, SP (A+) - 7.2 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K

Pill (2011, 4th round) has quietly put together a solid 2012 campaign. Splitting time between the Mets' two full season A-ball affiliates, Pill has struck out 105 while walking 22 and giving up 109 hits in 113 innings en route to a 2.31 ERA and a 1.159 WHIP. His strikeout rate has dipped a bit and his walk rate has risen slighty with his move up to Advanced A, but weeks like this past one will do plenty to fix that. The 22-year-old righty will finish out the year with a few more starts in the Florida State League and then start the 2013 season as a member of the starting rotation in either AA Binghamton or back in Advanced A St. Lucie.

Honorable Mention:

Rafael Montero, SP (A+) - 7.2 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Hansel Robles, SP (A-) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
Gabriel Ynoa, SP (A-) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
Alex Panteliodis, SP (A) - 6.0 IP, 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K

Top Hitting Prospect of the Week

Aderlin Rodriguez, 3B (A+) - 27 PA, .320/.370/.840, 7 R, 1 2B, 4 HR, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K

The system's 2012 homeruns leader, Rodriguez (2008, international) appears to have begun adjusting to the Florida State League. The righthanded slugger has seen his batting average, walk rate, and on-base percentage decline with the move up a level, but 100 PA deep into Advanced A he's also seen a dip in his strikeout rate and an increase in his isolated slugging percentage (entirely the result of this massive week). If Rodriguez is ultimately going to make it, his bat is going to have to carry him. Just 20 years old (he turns 21 in mid-November) Rodriguez is doing his part to make that a reality. A strong final month could carry Rodriguez to AA to start 2013, but more likely, he'll be back in St. Lucie working on the areas of his game (and there are plenty) that need improvement. Still he's among the better hitting prospects in the system and the year he's had in 2012 has increased his stock.
