2012 Mets Prospect Report: Week 15 (7/12 - 7/18)

Top Pitching Prospect of the Week

Jeurys Familia, SP (AAA) - 14.1 IP, 1-0, 0.63 ERA, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 15 K

Now that's more like it. After making gigantic strides as a prospect last year in Advanced A and AA, Familia (2007, international) has taken a step back in 2012, particularly with his control. In fairness, he's been one of the youngest players in AAA all year, but the 6.2 BB/9 he'd given up through 75 innings as of 2 weeks ago was (and remains) troubling nonetheless. However in his past 3 starts, including the two he made this past week, the big righthander has simply been much, much better in every aspect of his game. The optimistic take is that he spent the first 3 months of the season ironing out the kinks and now he's ready to dominate. The realistic take is that 3 good starts doesn't erase 3 lousy months. Either way, it's great to see Familia string some success together. As a member of the Mets' 40-man roster, Familia could be ticketed for a September call-up, especially if the rest of his July & August go as well as this past week did.

Honorable Mention:

Zack Wheeler, SP (AA) - 9.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
Rafael Montero, SP (A+) - 12.0 IP, 0-2, 1.50 ERA, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 18 K
Luis Mateo, SP (A-) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Tyler Pill, SP (A+) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 1.29 ERA, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Top Hitting Prospect of the Week

Brandon Nimmo, CF (A-) - 31 PA, .407/.484/.630, 7 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K

Since signing at the deadline last August, Mets fans have been anxiously waiting for Nimmo (2011, 1st round, 13th overall) to make his pro debut. Hits did not come cheap for the 19-year-old in his first few weeks in Brooklyn, but since then, he's been ripping the ball. He currently sits at .250/.392/.404, with a league-leading 22 walks in 130 plate appearances. Nimmo's ceiling is as high as any positional prospect in the system, and if his first month of professional baseball is any indication, he will be an exceptionally fun player to watch develop. In all likelihood, he'll start the 2013 season in Savannah regardless of how his last month and a half in Brooklyn turn out.

Vicente Lupo, OF (R) - 20 PA, .385/.600/.615, 3 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 5 BB, 2 K, 1 SB

Jefry Marte, 3B (AA) - 27 PA, .346/.370/.615, 4 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 0 BB, 0 K
Greg Pron, OF (A) - 26 PA, .560/.577/.800, 3 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 5 RBI, 0 BB, 1 K
