Top Pitching Prospect of the Week
Noah Syndergaard, SP (A+) - 7.0 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
In a strong week for Mets pitching prospects, I'm going with the second piece in last winter's blockbuster deal that sent RA Dickey to Toronto, who turned in his best performance as a Met this week. In fact, Syndergaard hasn't allowed an earned run in his past two starts, covering 13 innings during which he's walked 3 and struck out 11. The tall righty was the Mets' consensus #3 prospect coming into the season, so it's nice to see him settling in to Advanced A-ball so quickly. A nationally ranked prospect for the second straight year, Syndergaard could find himself at the center of a lot of trade speculation this winter (perhaps even this summer). But for now, I expect the Mets to keep him on the same minor league trajectory as Zack Wheeler, who spent the entirety of his age 20 season in Advanced-A.

Top Positional Prospect of the Week
Kevin Plawecki, C (A) - 25 PA, .500/.560/.864, 4 R, 5 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Unlike the pitchers, Plawecki made this pick easy. I've mentioned him in my report each of the season's first four weeks, and with good reason. He is too good for the South Atlantic League, and the numbers bear that out. Seriously, it's like he's playing a video game on Rookie level. Through 106 PA, Plawecki is leading the league in hitting (.402), slugging (.696), OPS (1.158), hits (37), doubles (15), and extra base hits (19). He ranks second in OBP (.462, which is .003 behind teammate Jayce Boyd) and 4th in RBI (21). Plawecki has doubled (15) more often than he's struck out (12). And he's done all of this playing his home games in a stadium that is renowned for suppressing offense. As a polished college hitter, he should be thriving against weaker, inexperienced pitching. But this goes well beyond thriving. I don't know whether the Mets will break from their recent MO & promote Plawecki so early in the season, but either way I'll be watching, fascinated.
