Reyes Compensation Tracker 3000

Last updated on 4/5/2012

UPDATE: It's Opening Day. I'm gonna go ahead and call it a career for Derrek Lee. This locks the Mets into the #35 and #71 picks as their compensation for Jose Reyes.

The Mets will get 2 compensation picks in the 2012 draft for Jose Reyes. One of those picks will come directly from the Marlins. The other compensatory selection will be a pick in the sandwich round between rounds 1 and 2.

Pick From Miami
The Mets will receive the Marlins' 2nd round selection, which is the 11th pick in that round. Below I list the best and worst possible overall picks that could be, based on the number of outstanding compensation-eligible free agents. As the offseason progresses, these best and worst case scenarios will converge on the pick that the Mets will ultimately receive.

Regular Picks Before MIA 2nd Rd38 picks
Extra Picks Before MIA 2nd Rd From Unsigned 2011 Draftees2 picks
Current Size of Sandwich Rd28 picks
Extra Picks Before MIA 2nd Rd From Modified Type A FAs2 picks
Outstanding Comp-Eligible FAs0 players
Outstanding Modified Type A FAs0 players
Mets' Best Possible Pick From MIA71st overall
Mets' Worst Possible Pick From MIA71st overall

Every compensation-eligible free agent who
1) re-signs with his former team (via extension, option, or other), or
2) accepts an arbitration offer, or
3) isn't offered arbitration, or
4) doesn't sign a 2012 contract
will remove one entry from the list of sandwich picks, improving the position of every 2nd and subsequent round pick by one spot.

Free Agents returning compensation (sandwich round order): Michael Cuddyer (MIN), Heath Bell (SD), Josh Willingham (OAK), Jose Reyes (NYM), Albert Pujols (STL), Jonathan Papelbon (BOS), Prince Fielder (MIL), CJ Wilson (TEX), Ryan Madson (PHI), Clint Barmes (HOU), Jason Kubel (MIN), Aramis Ramirez (CHC), Aaron Harang (SD), Ryan Doumit (PIT), Mark Ellis (COL), David DeJesus (OAK), Mark Buehrle (CWS), Ramon Hernandez (CIN), Jose Molina (TOR), Rod Barajas (LAD), Octavio Dotel (STL), Darren Oliver (TEX), Raul Ibanez (PHI), Carlos Pena (CHC), Francisco Cordero (CIN), Jon Rauch (TOR), Edwin Jackson (STL), Frank Francisco (TOR)

Remaining compensation-eligible FAs (alphabetical): None

* Note: Dan Wheeler was Type B compensation eligible, but he signed a minor league deal with the Indians, so it looks like the Red Sox are not entitled to draft pick compensation.

Sandwich Round Pick
Below is the pick the Mets would currently get in the sandwich round. Every player on this list who
1) re-signs with his former team (via extension, option, or other), or
2) accepts an arbitration offer, or
3) isn't offered arbitration, or
4) doesn't sign a 2012 contract
improves the sandwich pick the Mets will get for Reyes by one spot.
